Though vasectomy is a relatively simple outpatient procedure, proper preoperative and post-operative care is crucial to ensure a successful outcome and a comfortable recovery. Please review the provided Post-Vasectomy home care instructions for detailed instructions and pain management guidelines.

Vasectomy Pre-op Care

Thoroughly lather and clean your scrotal area the day before and the morning of your procedure.
Shave your scrotum within 24 hours prior to your procedure.
Wear comfortable clothing.
Do not wear boxers. We suggest wearing either a “jock-strap”, briefs, speedos, or biker shorts.
If prescribed, take anxiety medication 60 minutes prior to your procedure.
You may take Aleve, Tylenol, or Ibuprofen on the day of your procedure.
Eat a light meal 2-3 hours before the procedure.
Arrange a ride to & from your procedure.

Immediate Post-Vasectomy Care

Head home right after the procedure, lie down, and relax.
Wear your supportive undergarment.
Ice your scrotum and manage any pain with OTC Tylenol or Ibuprofen.
Do not run errands, walk around, or heavily exert yourself.

1 Week Post-Vasectomy

If you are mainly in a sedentary office job, then you can return to work in 3 days.
If you are in a physically demanding job, then you can return in 1 week.
You can resume lifting weights, running, or any other form of exercise 1 week after your procedure.
Most patients can resume engaging in sexual intercourse one week after the procedure.

What Not To Do Post-Vasectomy (Up to 1 Week)

Have sex or masturbate
Lift heavy objects (more than 30 pounds)
Ride a bike
Go swimming or in a hot tub
Disturb your incision site
Wear tight clothing
Participate in contact sports
